Charitable Giving at AutoTempest
Nathan Stretch October 1, 2020

When I founded AutoTempest.com, I wanted to help solve a problem: how to easily search multiple car shopping sites at the same time. It’s not a big problem, or even a particularly important one. But I do believe we’ve created the best way to search for used cars, saving millions of people a bit of time and frustration, and helping them find cars they’ll love. I’m happy with what we’ve accomplished, and excited about the ongoing improvements we have planned.

Of course, there are much greater challenges in the world than the difficulty of searching for used cars – challenges that can’t be solved by a website. Fortunately, there are also some excellent organizations working on these problems – whether eradicating terrible diseases, battling climate change, or strengthening our communities by helping those in need.

The AutoTempest team is passionate about doing our part to support organizations and causes that resonate with and reflect our values. We haven’t talked much about these causes in the past, but I do feel their work is important and worth sharing, so I hope you’ll indulge me!

Eradicating Disease, Improving Health, Helping the Needy, and Advancing Technology to Battle Climate Change

Like many, cancer has touched numerous people in my life. It’s a horrible disease that afflicts far too many.

We’ve supported the Terry Fox Foundation in Canada for a number of years. If you’re not familiar with Terry’s story, please take a moment and read about his extremely inspiring quest. While facing his personal battle with cancer, Terry wanted to help others. He embarked on mission to increase awareness and raise funds for much-needed cancer research, and he launched an important movement, one that in 2020 is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Terry’s no longer with us, but I truly believe there’s a bit of Terry in all of us.

In the United States we’ve partnered with our friend Freddy ‘Tavarish’ Hernandez to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Tavarish has a huge following, and it’s exciting to see him help raise BCRF awareness through popular videos like this.

We also champion other important international and domestic organizations like the Against Malaria Foundation and the many wide-ranging CARE efforts through the organization’s Canadian arm. This year we’re focusing on their efforts to battle the effects of the Coronavirus in regions least equipped to manage the pandemic. Here in Victoria where we’re based, we give to Our Place, an inner-city community center serving Greater Victoria’s most vulnerable: the working poor, impoverished elderly, those who are mentally and physically challenged, addicted citizens, and the homeless.

One new cause that I’m excited about is Project Vesta. Tackling climate change requires a dual-pronged approach. A big part, of course, is significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  However, developing methods to actually reduce greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere – commonly referred to as carbon capture – ultimately will be important, as well. Project Vesta’s approach is one of the most promising I’ve seen in this area, as it has the potential to be far more cost-effective and scalable than alternatives. I highly recommend checking out their website.

It’s a particularly tough time for everyone right now, and especially charities. Not only do many people have fewer dollars to contribute, many charities that rely on in-person events for much of their fundraising have been hit particularly hard. So, if like us you are fortunate to still have the means, I’ll ask you to consider supporting worthy causes, whether they are the ones I’ve highlighted above, or others of your choice. There is strength in numbers, and if everyone contributes – whether it’s a few dollars or some of your free time – great things are possible.
