Want to know how much the car you’re looking at will depreciate?

We’ve been working on a brand-new feature, and we’re excited to finally share it with you. It is now possible to see price trends for any car you’re interested in. Just pop in details like the car’s make and model, plus anything else you want, like specific years, transmission, body style, etc., and we’ll show you not just all the current listings that match, but ALL the historical ones too. So you can see how prices have been trending over the past few months and years, and maybe get an idea of what they’re likely to do in the future!

So, What Is Car Depreciation Anyway?

In simple terms, car depreciation is how much your vehicle’s value drops over time. The second you drive off the lot, your shiny new car starts to lose value—sometimes by as much as 20–30% in the first year! (That’s one reason we at AutoTempest are big fans of buying used!) After that, the decline tends to be steadier, usually around 15% per year. Things like mileage, overall condition, brand reputation, and arket trends can all affect how quickly your car depreciates.

Why does this matter? There are two ways to look at it. Most obviously, depreciation plays a big role in how much you’ll get when the time comes to sell or trade in your car. Some vehicles hold their value better than others, which can make a big difference in the long run. Also though, if you’re flexible with when you buy, you might make depreciation work to your advantage, buying a car after it’s dropped significantly in value, rather than before!

Whether you’re planning a future upgrade or just keeping tabs on your car’s worth, knowing how depreciation works is super helpful. And with our new Price Trends search, you’ll have all that insight right at your fingertips!
